Houston Healthcare Hosts “New Year, New You” Event

On January 18, 2023, Houston Healthcare’s Community Education (EduCare) Department hosted its annual “New Year, New You” program at the Cary Martin Conference Center. This year’s theme, “Roadmap to Longevity,” focused on simple lifestyle changes that can extend lifespan and improve quality of life.

“Many people recognize the need to make positive lifestyle changes but have no idea where to begin,” says Sheldon Mattox, director of Houston Healthcare’s EduCare Department. “That’s where events like ‘New Year, New You’ can help by offering ‘steps’ in the right direction for members of the community. The bottom line is that we don’t have to make extensive changes all at once.”

102 people attended this free community program which offered participants a chance to take advantage of several health screenings and sample different types of exercise that included low-impact aerobics, chair yoga and breath work. Along with the health screenings and the chance to move, attendees were educated about the importance of fueling their body with healthy foods and finding ways to reduce the amount of stress in their lives.

After sampling each of the activities, participants enjoyed a healthy meal and took a biological age self-assessment. They also had an opportunity to learn more about the programs offered by Houston Healthcare’s Community Education Department. The classes offered, most of which are free, are designed to keep participants moving and to help them recognize healthy changes that can be made to assist in enhancing their health and longevity.
