Important Information

The cost-estimate resources below are estimates of out-of-pocket costs for the planned hospital test(s) and or procedure(s) selected and are not a guarantee of costs or the final bill. Estimates do not reflect the final costs for services rendered. Costs vary due to complications, final diagnosis, recommended treatment by the doctor that is unknown at the time of the estimate, the terms and coverages of any applicable health benefit plan/insurance, the time at which services are rendered, location, and a variety of other factors. Costs may also vary between different hospitals within our system, so please make sure you are viewing the estimate for your desired hospital(s).

Charges/costs for services rendered at a hospital generally consist of at least two broad components: the charges/costs of the hospital and the charges/costs of the physicians and certain other clinical professionals. The cost estimate information provided on this webpage and in the tools (linked to below) are for hospital charges/costs only and do not include charges or costs for services provided by physicians and other clinical professionals. For example:

  • If a patient uses this webpage to estimate the cost of a particular surgery, the information shown will be the estimated charges/cost of the hospital only and does not include charges/costs of the physician surgeon, the physician anesthesiologist, or other professional services.
  • If a patient uses this webpage to estimate the cost of a particular imaging scan, like an MRI scan, the information shown will be the estimated charges/cost of the hospital only and does not include charges/costs of the physician radiologist to read/interpret the scan or other professional services.

(Please note that the above are non-exhaustive examples only.) Patients should contact the applicable office for the physician or other clinical professional for pricing information related to their charges/costs.

Please remember, that the amount a patient pays is ultimately dependent upon the terms/coverages of any applicable health benefits plan/insurance. Patients should contact their health plan/insurance provider for questions regarding the terms and coverages of their health benefit plans/insurance, if any.

By using the information on this webpage and the tools (linked to below), you acknowledge and agree that the information and tools do not constitute any guarantee, promise, or agreement between you and our hospital system and/or its affiliates and agree not to assert, and hereby waive, any argument or claim to the contrary.

Can I Get A Cost Estimate for Services?

Yes, we encourage patients to estimate out-of-pocket expenses in advance of planned healthcare services. Using the tools (linked below), patients can estimate hospital charges/costs for a subset of non-emergent, pre-planned services (also known as “shoppable services”). Please note that the tools are not an exhaustive list of all services provided at our hospitals, but are only a subset of services offered. For information regarding services not included in the tools, please contact us using the phone numbers listed below.

Frequently Asked Questions

For more information on price transparency, please see the answers to the following FAQs.

Does Emory Healthcare have billing, insurance, and financial assistance information?

  • Billing Information - For patients who have health insurance, the billing amount owed depends on the patient’s insurance coverage and the insurance company’s contract with the hospital.
  • Insurance Information - Patients who do not have health insurance may be eligible for reduced billing costs through Emory Healthcare’s financial assistance policy, or may qualify for Medicaid coverage.
  • Financial Assistance

What is a shoppable service?

You can plan a consumer-shoppable service in advance. The cost estimate tool is for a limited number of shoppable services. It is not a complete list.

Estimates are impossible to provide for emergencies. In an emergency, we cannot predict the exact course of care you may need.

The estimate tool is for hospital services only. It does not include services provided by the doctors who treat you while you are at the hospital. You may receive separate bills from the hospital and your doctors.

What is a chargemaster?

A chargemaster is a list of standard gross charges for each service or item that a hospital provides. This includes each test, exam, surgical procedure, room charge, and more. A chargemaster contains thousands of services.

Patients typically do not receive a chargemaster. Instead, an insurance company, Medicare or Medicaid gets the bill for chargemaster amounts. Those insurers then apply their contracted rates to the billed services.

If you don’t have insurance, Emory Healthcare has financial assistance policies. You may receive discounts if you qualify.

Are gross charges the same for every patient?

The listing of standard gross charges in the chargemaster is the same for all patients.

However, the total costs for an individual patient may vary for several reasons. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Amount of time to perform the service and for you to recover in the hospital
  • Complexity of the service or procedure
  • Complications that require additional treatment
  • Other health conditions that may affect your care
  • Setting and location of the service or procedure

Is the charge the same as what a patient pays?

The charge listed in the chargemaster is generally not the amount you will pay.

If you have health insurance, the amount you owe depends on your specific health insurance coverage. It also depends on your insurance company’s contract with the hospital.

If you don’t have health insurance, you may be eligible for reduced costs through Emory Healthcare’s financial assistance policy. If you meet certain criteria, you may qualify for Medicaid coverage.

What does a chargemaster list not include?

The hospital’s chargemaster does not include charges for services provided by the doctor (or doctors) who treat you while you are at the hospital. You may receive separate bills from the hospital and doctors involved in your care.

Do all of our hospitals have the same price for the same services?

Not necessarily. Prices often vary from one facility to another for many reasons. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Complexity of the service or procedure
  • Complications that require additional treatment
  • Insurance provider, type of plan/network, and benefit coverage conditions
  • Length of time to perform the service and for you to recover in the hospital
  • Multiple services received at the same time
  • Other health conditions that may affect your care
  • Setting and location of the service or procedure (inpatient, outpatient, observation, and hospital location)
