Houston Healthcare Welcomes New Class of Resident Physicians

As part of the Family Medicine Residency Program, Houston Healthcare welcomed the second class of Resident Physicians. In a luncheon and White Coat Ceremony, the Residents were welcomed by Cary Martin, Chief Executive Officer for Houston Healthcare, as well as Dr. Jefferson Davis, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer for the System. Members of the Executive Team were also in attendance to greet and welcome them to the System.

Dr. Gretta Gross, Director of the Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program, greeted each new Resident and presented them with their white coat. “This is symbolic for the Residents because it represents a real transition for the students as they change from the short coat worn by medical students to the long white coat worn by physicians,” stated Dr. Davis. “This ceremony also marks a new level of professionalism and accountability for the Resident Physicians.”

As Mr. Martin addressed the new Resident Physicians he shared with them, “This is a big day for each of you, and it is a continuation of the long journey you have been on for some time. It’s our obligation and our commitment to provide you with the very best opportunity we possibly can and to make this a rewarding experience for each one of you.” He further stated “This is a wonderful day, and we appreciate the confidence you have in us as individuals and as an institution to be there as your partner.” He also thanked Dr. Gross for her leadership, guidance, and willingness to train the Resident Physicians as they continue on their journey.

Dr. Gross summed up the day with words of advice for the Resident Physicians, “You now carry a different level of responsibility. It becomes so much more because you are now the physician writing the orders and impacting the care that is provided to our patients. This will be an exciting time, but you will also experience many challenges. Most importantly, it will be a great time of growth for you as an individual and as a physician.”

This year’s class added seven new Resident Physicians to the Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program. In total, the program includes 16 Resident Physicians who provide care at Houston Medical Center and the Pavilion Family Medicine Clinic. There are also three board certified Osteopathic Family Medicine physicians, in addition to Dr. Gross, who serve as Faculty for the Residency Program.
