Family Medicine Residency Program Scores High on Initial AOA Inspection

As with The Joint Commission hospital inspections, all physician residency programs must be reviewed to determine compliance with required standards and assessment of the quality of education being provided. The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) serves as the accrediting body for osteopathic residencies across the country and in this capacity, reviews and approves all training policies and approves programs based on compliance with these standards.

Representatives from the American Osteopathic Association visited Houston Medical Center and Pavilion Family Medical Clinic in February for the initial inspection of our residency program. After all the information was reviewed by the various committees at the AOA, we received the report which graded Houston Healthcare at 100% as an institute sponsoring graduate medical education, and the Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency as 100% for the work being done to train residents in our program. Executive Director of the AOA Osteopathic Postdoctural Training Institute, Joanne Jones, MBA, reviewed the results and reported that it is rare for a new program to score so high.

“For a new program to receive a 100% grade on initial inspection is an outstanding accomplishment,” stated Dr. Charlie Nutinsky, VP of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer. “The entire faculty, administrative staff, and residents should be
commended for that accomplish with an additional thank you to the Executive Leadership and Board for their support.”
