Committed to Caring: Houston Medical Center Medical Staff Donates to the Volunteer Medical Clinic

The Houston County Volunteer Medical Clinic recently received a donation of $10,000 from the Houston Medical Center Medical Staff to aid its mission of providing primary, non-emergency medical care to working uninsured residents.

Dr. Mohammad Al-Shroof, Chief of Staff for Houston Medical Center, presented the check to Cheryl Taylor, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Volunteer Clinic. The funds will be used to assist the Clinic in continuing to serve the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved and their households who live and work in Houston County.

“We are pleased once again to be able to financially support the Volunteer Clinic,” stated Dr. Al-Shroof. “The Clinic continues to meet the medical needs of our community – serving a special population that may not have assistance without their help. Many of the physicians in our community generously volunteer their time to ensure proper care is available for these patients. We are happy to support this worthwhile organization.”

Physicians on staff at Houston Medical Center and Perry Hospital, along with a number of retired physicians and others from the medical community serve as volunteer staff for the Clinic.

“We are helping those patients who may otherwise not get the care they need, especially the ones with chronic conditions that can be controlled if caught early, keeping them out of the emergency rooms,” shared Denise Sharpe, Director of the Volunteer Medical Clinic. “We also provide free medication to our patients through the Pharmaceutical Patient Assistance Program. Some of our patients have hundreds of dollars of medication that they take every month. We do not want them to have to choose between paying for their medication or providing for their family.”

A United Way agency, the Volunteer Clinic is able to provide free health care services to the uninsured of Houston County only with the continued support of the community through donations and volunteers. “We are constantly recruiting volunteers and there is always a need for more doctors to come on board and participate. Donations of any kind are always needed and greatly appreciated. We have a small budget, but we do a lot with the limited funding that we do have,” Sharpe added.
