Medical Library

In support of quality patient care and service and educational excellence, medical library resources are selected to foster evidence-based medicine (EBM) practices and standards of care and are available to the physicians, medical students and employees of Houston Healthcare.


  • To provide anytime access to the most current clinical information to enhance patient care decisions by all healthcare providers at Houston Healthcare;
  • To be responsive to the strategic goals of Houston Healthcare through communication with hospital administration, the Medical Education Committee, and physicians;
  • To facilitate and partner with teaching faculty to educate residents and medical students in competent access, management, and critical assessment of literature and research.
  • To promote quality improvement, continuing medical education (CME), and life-long learning;
  • To provide leadership in the selection and management of evidence-based medicine resources.

Electronic (web-based, virtual) Resources

Houston Healthcare has made available state-of-the-art electronic resources that provide access to the latest clinical information to improve patient care and safety. These resources are available 24 hours a day in all of the physician lounges or any computer at Houston Medical Center or Perry Hospital that has access to the Houston Healthcare Intranet. These services are provided for free to physicians, residents, medical students, and other employees.

EBM resource covering 8,500 topics in 17 different medical specialties


The Georgia Interactive Network for Medical Information is a statewide, electronic medical library system that provides access to a variety of electronic journals and books, all National Library of Medicine services, MD Consult, the Cochrane Database and other EBM resources, and Centers for Disease Control materials. Full-text journal articles are available through this service

Visual DX

A diagnostic decision support system that provides over 19,000 medical images to discern differential diagnoses

Users access these databases to research national standards of care, EBM guidelines, and current clinical and medical-economic trends. Physicians also use these for point of care decision making, research, teaching, and CME purposes.

Hard Copy Resources

Select hardcopy resources have been purchased for physician use and are housed in the physician lounges. Additional purchases will be made at the discretion of hospital administration, the Medical Education Committee, or as requested by other Medical Staff committees or individual physicians.
