Houston Healthcare Promotes Walk Georgia Initiative
More than 3,000 Georgians "walked" their way across the state earlier this year in the inaugural session of Walk Georgia - a free eight-week program sponsored by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension that challenges participants to engage in physical activity while keeping track of their progress online.
"The goal of Walk Georgia is to encourage whole communities to be active, whether they're walking, riding bikes or dancing," explains Beth Jones, RN, CDE, Director of Community Education and Services for Houston Healthcare. "The program serves to motivate people and holds them accountable if the get off track."
The second session of the Walk Georgia Program begins September 7th and runs through November 1st. Participants can register online at www.walkgeorgia.org beginning August 24 through September 14 as individuals or as teams of four. Then, they can record the amount of time their team exercises and the website will translate that time into miles, allowing them to "walk" around the state virtually.
Houston Healthcare has joined forces with the Houston County Cooperative Extension Office to promote the second session of Walk Georgia by hosting a Houston County Walk Georgia Community Kick-Off Event on Thursday, August 28th from 5:30 to 6:30pm in the Middle Georgia Technical College Auditorium located at 80 Cohen Walker Drive in Warner Robins. Anyone interested in participating can attend this free event to learn ways to increase their physical activity as well as how to register for the free eight-week program.
