EduCare Community Health Education
Health education, wellness and disease prevention are important to us at Houston Healthcare. Our EduCare program offers a variety of classes and support groups to meet your healthcare needs. From first aid and CPR to weight loss programs, blood pressure checks and childbirth classes, EduCare strives to provide health and wellness education to help you improve your health status and quality of life.

Accident Prevention
AARP Driver Safety Program
A comprehensive driving course designed to update drivers of all ages on the knowledge and skills of driving. Upon course completion, participants are eligible for a 10% discount on auto insurance. Safe Kids of Houston County
Led by Houston Healthcare, Safe Kids of Houston County is one of 22 community coalitions operating in the state of Georgia as part of Safe Kids USA, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury. Childbirth Education
Grandparenting 101
Grandparents play a special and important role in any family; however, times have changed, as well as the information related to child-rearing. That's why it's important to be familiar with current baby-care issues. This class focuses on infants through three years of age, and will include information on safety issuse, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), infant development, schedules and routines, along with car seat overview. If you are new or soon-to-be grandparents or are currently raising your grandchildren, this class is for you. Door prizes, including care seats, will be given away. Gestational Diabetes Education Program
Gestational Diabetes can be a very serious condition of pregnancy if not controlled. The goal of the program is to work collaboratively with the patient's physician and staff to ensure a good outcome for both mother and baby. The program includes a detailed initial assessment by a Registered Nurse—either on a one-on-one basis or as part of a small group— nutritional instruction with a Registered Dietitian, and monthly follow-up phone calls until delivery. Community CPR
American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Training
This course is recommended for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements such as a caregiver, lifeguard, security guard, airport employee, retail, teacher, etc., as well as for anyone non-medical who would like to take a CPR course. Participants will receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED card upon course completion. Cost is $15 and must be paid in advance at the EduCare Department located in the Houston Health Pavilion at 233 North Houston Road, Warner Robins. Friends and Family First Aid
This course is for anyone who wants to learn basic first aid skills that can be used in medical emergencies such as respiratory issues, choking, seizures, shock, heart attack, stroke, diabetes and allergic reactions, as well as injury emergencies involving bleeding, head/neck/spine, broken bones, sprains, burns, and eye injuries, and environmental injuries including bites and stings, heat stroke, and poisoning. This class is recommended for families, babysitters, grandparents, teachers, home health attendants, adult assisted-living workers, construction workers, personal trainers, adult home care workers, and coaches. Participants will receive a Heartsaver First Aid card upon course completion. Cost is $10 and must be paid in advance at the EduCare Department located in the Houston Health Pavilion at 233 North Houston Road in Warner Robins. Small Steps: How to Prevent or Delay Type 2 Diabetes
Research has proven that Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented in persons at risk. This program was created by the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) to provide individuals with basic tools to help them make appropriate lifestyle changes and reduce their risk for developing diabetes. Diabetes Update for Health Care Professionals
The way diabetes is treated and managed changes at such a rapid pace that it is imperative that health care professionals stay up-to-date in order to provide their patients with the most recent and best treatment options. This day-long event will provide health care professionals with a variety of different topics related to the current trends and treatment for diabetes. An application has been submitted to the Georgia Nurses Association for contact hour approval. Participants must pre-register for the event. Handouts, refreshments and lunch will be provided. Each participant must complete an evaluation at the end of the program in order to receive a certificate of completion. Cost is $5 to attend and is non-refundable. Diabetes Management: "Steps to Success" Course
Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, this course is taught by Certified Diabetes Educators who are also Registered Nurses and Registered Dietitians. The course consists of a one-hour initial assessment and education, a two and a half-hour nutrition class, and two four-hour comprehensive education classes. Follow up is done at three, six, and 12 months after completion of the entire program. Physician referral is required. Medicare and most insurance plans accepted. Financial assistance is also available to those who qualify through Houston Healthcare's Financial Services office by calling 975-5222.
Diabetes Nutrition and Meal Planning Class
For individuals with pre-diabetes or diabetes who need a nutrition review or people with newly diagnosed diabetes. A physician nutrition prescription is required. Call 923-9771 for the schedule of classes and to register.
Diabetes Exercise Program

Help for the Heart: Heart Failure Program
An 8-week education and exercise program designed to improve the quality of life for persons with heart failure. Taught by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, educational topics include Understanding Heart Failure, Nutrition, Combating Fatigue, and Medicatons. Exercise sessions are tailored to each individual's needs by a trained exercise specialist. Hypertension Self-Management
Gain the knowledge and skills you need to control your high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. This free class is comprised of an initial one hour session followed by five monthly follow-ups. This program is taught by a Registered Nurse and is designed to equip participants to better manage their blood pressure through appropriate nutrition and medication management. Healthy Living for Life
Weight control, healthy eating and exercise are the most effective ways to reduce your risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. The weight management class will teach you how to modify your eating habits and includes a group discussion on various nutrition topics and offers follow-up support. The exercise portion allows you to set your own schedule and pace, with monthly weigh-ins. Walking is done on an individual basis.
