Houston Medical Center Breaks Ground For New Northwest Patient Tower

Houston Healthcare officials and local dignitaries joined together Tuesday, April 10th for the official groundbreaking of the Houston Medical Center campus expansion including a Northwest Patient Tower, Central Energy Plant and addition to the Houston Heart Institute.

The 130,581-square-foot Northwest Patient tower will provide Houston Medical Center with additional medical/surgical beds and observation/23 hour patient beds, including dedicated orthopedic, pediatric, post-partum, intensive care and step-down care units. Patient room size will increase from 185 square feet to 275 square feet. The project includes new construction and more than 21,000 square feet of renovated space for ancillary support services including Dietary, Clinical Laboratory and Central Sterile Supply. Other improved areas will include expanded space for admissions and patient registration, education and meeting rooms, lobby and public areas, as well as new parking areas and improved access to the campus. The total estimated cost of construction, furnishings, fixtures and equipment is $60.4 million.

The total estimated cost for the Central Energy Plant is $15 million, and the total estimated cost for the Houston Heart Institute expansion is $1 million.

The campus expansion project is being designed by HKS, Inc., a healthcare facility planning and architectural firm in Atlanta, and WMA Architects, Inc. of Macon. The general contractor for the project is Gilbane, Inc. of Atlanta.
