Sound the Alarms to Stomp Out Asthma with Houston Healthcare’s Annual Asthma Camp for Kids and Adults
Houston Healthcare is hosting its annual Asthma Camp on Saturday, May 14th from 9 a.m. until 12 noon at Lake Joy Primary School, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The annual Asthma Camp teaches children ages five to 13 living with asthma, as well as their parents and other family members or caregivers, how to properly manage the condition to reduce complications.
“Our Asthma Camp teaches children how to recognize and manage their asthma symptoms, triggers and medicines, as well as how to manage the condition at school or away from home. Their parents will have the opportunity to learn about asthma and medications, school and asthma, allergies associated with asthma, and an asthma action plan,” explains Vicky Alexander, RN, FNP, Disease Management Coordinator for Houston Healthcare. “We mix educational door prizes, giveaways, fun activities and games throughout the camp.”
Asthma can be controlled, but not cured. It is the leading chronic illness in children and the leading cause of school absences, affecting more than 13 million children and adults in the United States. In 2007, complications from asthma resulted in 10,000 hospitalizations and over 54,000 emergency room visits for the estimated 300,000 children in Georgia who have asthma. Despite recent advances in treatments, nearly 5,500 deaths occur each year from asthma.
Pre-registration for the annual Asthma Camp is required by calling (478) 923-9771. The camp is free for children ages five to 13 with asthma and their parents. Refreshments will be provided. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
