Houston Healthcare Sponsors Asthma Camp for Kids

Houston Healthcare is hosting its annual Asthma Camp on Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Lake Joy Primary School with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. For adults, parents, children and family members living with asthma, this year's camp will help attendees learn the tools for proper asthma management.

"Our Asthma Camp teaches children about recognizing and managing asthma symptoms, asthma triggers and medicines as well as going to school with asthma. Their parents will have the opportunity to learn about asthma and medications, school and asthma, allergies associated with asthma, and an asthma action plan," explains Vicky Alexander, RN, FNP, Disease Management Coordinator for Houston Healthcare. "We'll mix educational door prizes, giveaways, fun activities and games throughout the camp."

Asthma is the leading chronic illness in children. It can be controlled, but not cured. Asthma affects more than 13 million children and adults in the United States. Despite recent advances in treatments, deaths from asthma are rising-approximately two per 100,000 Georgians die from asthma each year. More than 11 percent of children in Georgia have asthma, and over 1,700 students in the Houston County School System have asthma. Statewide statistics indicate that 88,000 children with asthma missed 540,000 days of school, and 63,000 parents of children with asthma missed 390,000 days of work or school.

Pre-registration for the camp is required by calling (478) 923-9771. There is no cost to attend, and lunch will be provided for those who pre-register. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
