Houston Medical Center Designated One of America's 100 Best Hospitals

HealthGrades® America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals for 2012Houston Medical Center has been recognized for demonstrating superior and sustained clinical quality, placing it among an elite group of hospitals in the United States: HealthGrades® America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals for 2012. Houston Medical Center is one of only three hospitals in Georgia named by HealthGrades as one of America’s 100 Best.

HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent source of hospital quality ratings, provides objective clinical quality ratings based on the outcomes of nearly every hospital in the country. To be recognized with this distinction, hospitals must have been designated as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ for five consecutive years. To be ranked in clinical excellence, hospitals had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates low enough to place them in the top five percent in the nation. On average, patients treated at America’s 100 Best Hospitals had nearly a 30 percent lower risk of death.

“We are pleased to be recognized as one of the nation’s 100 Best Hospitals,” states Cary Martin, Chief Executive Officer for Houston Healthcare. “This recognition is an incredible testament to the sound, diligent, and consistent care our people provide every day. Each employee, physician and volunteer should be congratulated for their role in this outstanding achievement.”

HealthGrades rates providers on clinical outcomes for 27 different diagnoses and procedures on a five-star basis—five stars for “excellent,” three stars for “as expected,” and one star for “poor”—based on the most recent three years of Medicare data available, which is 2008 through 2010. HealthGrades’ risk adjusted methodology considers important differences in patient demographic and clinical characteristics, allowing for a more accurate and valid comparison of clinical outcomes at different hospitals.

“As our nation seeks to elevate the quality of care at all hospitals, these elite facilities provide a roadmap for success,” said Dr. Arshad Rahim, HealthGrades Director of Accelerated Clinical Excellence. “Consumers increasingly are demanding greater transparency and quality when selecting healthcare providers. These hospitals are delivering. We commend them for their dedication to excellence in patient care.”

HealthGrades compared the performance of America’s 100 Best Hospitals, such as Houston Medical Center, to all others and found:

  • Collectively, from 2008 through 2010, Houston Medical Center had almost a 30 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality across 17 procedures and diagnoses.
  • From 2008 through 2010, if all hospitals performed at the level of America’s 100 Best Hospitals, then 179,593 reported Medicare deaths may have been prevented.

“Our staff continues to fulfill our mission of providing patient-focused, high-quality services to the communities we serve,” says Martin. “As an organization, we are committed to improving the healthcare of those who depend on us daily for their medical care. By achieving America’s 100 Best, it places us among the top two percent in the nation for overall clinical excellence. Our community continues to rely on us for quality services, and it is our hope this recognition only strengthens their confidence in the level of care they receive while in our facilities.”
