With temps easily reaching into the 100s during the summer months, the heat can be particularly harmful for anyone working outdoors in direct sunlight or in hot environments. Such working conditions makes employees susceptible to heat-induced illnesses such as heat stress, heat exhaustion or deadly heat stroke.
If you work outdoors in hot weather, follow these five tips to protect yourself:
-
Star work well hydrated and drink as much as a cup of water every 15 minutes.
-
Watch co-workers for signs of heat-related illness such as headaches, dizziness or nausea.
-
Pace your work and take scheduled breaks.
-
Wear lightweight clothing and remove protective gear when it's safe to do so.
-
Avoid drinking caffeine or eating a heavy meal.
